This is a weekend workshop on how to make iOS games with Cocos2D, by the authors of Learning Cocos2D: A Hands-On Guide to Building iOS Games with Cocos2D, Box2D, and Chipmunk, published by Addison-Wesley.
In this workshop, you’ll get hands-on experience using Cocos2D to make games for the iPhone, by making a sequence of mini-games! You'll leave the workshop having made 4 games! See the games here: http://youtu.be/W8ecWU5JjIA
Through a series of slides, demos, and hands-on exercises, you will learn:
- How to add sprites, move them with actions, and play sound effects
- How to use sprite sheets, animations, and move characters via the accelerometer
- How to use the Chipmunk game physics library that is included with Cocos2D
- How to use Chipmunk joints, impulses, and forces
- How to use tile maps to create large, scrolling worlds to explore
- How to make games for both iPhone, iPad, and Retina display
- And much more!
This workshop doesn't require any experience with Cocos2D (but it's okay if you have some already!). The workshop does assume that you have prior knowledge of Objective-C and a basic familiarity with XCode. Bring your Mac and iPhones/iPads if you have them.
The workshop will be from 9am-5pm on Saturday, October 15th and Sunday, October 16th in Denver, CO at the Denver Airport Marriott, Gateway Park, 16455 E. 40th Circle, Aurora, CO 80011.
A networking/social event will immediately follow the training on Saturday.
Following the social event on Saturday, Ray and Rod will be available for lab time to help you with your own projects or to help you with the projects from the workshop.
Sign up for this workshop today, and soon you’ll be making your own games on the App Store!
There are rooms available at the Denver Airport Marriott, just call 303-371-4333 and mention that you are coming for the iPhone Game Programming class or "Shawn's Bits" and we have a limited number of rooms blocked off.
What past attendees have said about the workshop:
"Let me say that like almost everyone who plays a game I have dreamed of making a game. With the training that we got from Rod and Ray we did two games (small games) in less than 30 hours of work! That is the first time ever that I have designed and implemented a game idea. Now I can really consider myself a game developer."
"This workshop was one of the best workshops I have attended in my [career]! The instructors made all the difference in their willingness of sharing their working knowledge of game development with the rest of us. I highly recommend this workshop!"
"The Cocos2D via minigames workshop allowed me to learn both the basics and some advanced techniques in just 2 days. It would have taken me weeks to learn the same things on my own!"
Instructor Bios:
Rod Strougo is the founder and lead developer of the studio Prop Group, www.prop.gr. Rod’s journey in physics and games started way back with an Apple ][ writing games in Basic. These days Rod enjoys helping others get started on their paths to making games.
Ray Wenderlich is an iPhone developer and gamer, and the founder of Razeware LLC. Ray is passionate about both making apps and teaching others the techniques to make them. He has written a bunch of tutorials about iOS development, which are available at www.raywenderlich.com.
